Visiting Castle Donington
Castle Donington is a large village, with a population of around 7000 on the borders of Derbyshire and Leicestershire at the edge of the National Forest. It is the closest village to East Midlands Airport which is served by several major airlines including BMI, Ryanair, Thomson Airways and many others. Castle Donington is also home to the world famous Donington Park motor racing circuit.
The village is a mix of the old and new, with modern developments mixed with dignified Georgian and Regency houses. Several timber-framed houses dating from the 17th Century and earlier survive along the main road and provide points of interest for the village's heritage trail.
The castle from which Castle Donington takes its name is now merely a mound on the northern edge of the village. It was built to command the crossing points of the River Trent in the eleventh century. The castle was erected in the typical motte and bailey style of the times and was finally demolished in 1595.
